Private wells around Claude

Claude is the Armstrong County seat, about 27 miles east of Amarillo near the head of Palo Duro Canyon. Wells draw from the Ogallala Aquifer and, in parts of the county, the deeper Dockum Aquifer. The Texas Water Development Board describes Dockum water as generally hard and often high in dissolved solids, with some wells exceeding standards for gross alpha (radioactivity) or nitrate, so testing is worth it for deeper wells. A state monitoring well west-southwest of Claude recently showed water about 170 feet down — shallower than much of the Panhandle.

Drilling or replacing a well near Claude

Claude is within the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District, which covers most of Armstrong County.

For a household or livestock well producing 17.5 gallons per minute or less, the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District does not require a production permit, but the well must be registered with the district before drilling so it can confirm spacing. Registration carries a refundable deposit, returned once the driller files the completion report and log. Drilling an unregistered well can bring a penalty, so call the district before work starts.
